About Bass Lessons

The Academy of Music provides private Bass lessons for ages of 10 and up. (Younger students would benefit by starting on a standard guitar due to the size of the instrument.) We also offer "Rock Starz ™" rock band classes for students that would like to play in a band.

Whether you want a Bass teacher for rock, blues, jazz, country or most other styles, we've got you covered. The Bass is the part of the foundation of any band and thorough understanding of chord theory is key to the success of the player.

Levels of Bass Lessons

Different stages of learning as well as personal preference will dictate different programs of study, which is why private instruction is best. Most students will not reach the advanced level of playing, which is fine because not everyone wants to be a professional Bassist. What is important is that each student can go as far as his or her dedication and desire will allow.

Fun Facts About Bass Lessons

1. You will often hear the bass referred to as the "foundation" of a band! Bass players create the rhythmic and harmonic framework that holds the music together. So, although less audible than some of the other band instruments, the bass is really cornerstone to the success of a band!

2. You will see most bass guitars featuring four strings, but there are also five-string, six-string, and even more exotic versions of the traditional bass. Each of these versions features a unique flavor to the instrument's sound and style.

3. Bassists and drummers often work closely to create a tight rhythm. Bass lessons at an intermediate and advanced level will often emphasize the importance of syncing up with the drummer's kick and snare patterns.

4. Bass guitar lessons often involve teaching fundamental music theory concepts, such as scales, chords, and intervals. This knowledge helps bassists create melodic and harmonic lines that complement the overall sound.

5. Learning bass guitar can boost self-confidence, as bassists play a crucial role in the band's sound and feel empowered by their contribution.

Our students have an opportunity to showcase their progress over the 10 performances per year we hold for all of our programs, averaging nearly 1 performance every month. All opportunities are optional, but highly recommended for students! We also pride ourselves on holding fundraisers and events with outside organizations, which in the past include the Lakers, Walmart Foundation, Children’s Hospital Miracle Network, and Rady’s Children’s Hospital, amongst others.

In addition to being a proud member of the Music Teachers’ Association of California (a professional organization dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in music education) and a Steinway & Sons Teaching and Educational Partner (an extremely rare designation for private music schools), we also partner with local nonprofits, public and private schools, and charter schools. Among our alumni are music industry professionals, actors, and performers, such as America’s Got Talent-2018 Golden Buzzer recipient, Makayla Phillips!
